Hey everyone! My wife, Alyssa, and I live in beautiful Slave Lake, Alberta. We left the IC a few months ago, and we feel like we're in that in-between stage (wilderness) where we are making room for Christ and are maturing in Him. This is tough, of course. Gene Edwards points out that if one desires an authentic first-century church experience then he or she MUST move to a city, because it is very difficult to find like-minded folk in a city - therefore nearly impossible to find like-minded folk in a small town. However, we genuinely feel like we're supposed to remain here for a few years and allow the Lord to plant an ekklesia community here with us.
I could go on for hours about what we have been learning so far, and I would love to bless you with these experiences of ours. But for now, I would really like to hear from other small town people about their experiences. Any amount of sharing, wisdom, or encouragement would be super helpful. What did the Lord teach you in the wilderness? How did he provide for your family? Did you finally get out of the wilderness and into Cannan (a community of believers devoted to the Lord and one another in love)? If so, I would love to hear about this experience :) Bless you!
Josh

We didn't go seeking but it was amazing how God used a man that we hadn't seen in 19 years who gave us the book "Reamagining Church. He said his pastor gave it to him and that was it. I was amazed to find how much God had been revealing to us over that last 15 years that was opposite of what the churches preach today. We decided to read the rest of FV books, I knew it was time to leave the IC. It has been 2 1/2 years now and we are growing more than before and we too are still in the wilderness and learning and unlearning much. Many of our christian friends also see the problems in the church but say there is nothing you can do to change it and are not willing to make the change.
I have home schooled my for 9 years, not to keep them from the world but to allow what God wanted to develop in them to take place. It was my children who saw the transition from middle school to high school groups who were actively engaging in worldly attitudes, i.e. clicks, class and plain old games that as home schoolers they were immune to. I never thought I would have to leave the church so my children would not pick up an outward experience vs. and inward life change. Today, my daughter is so on fire for Christ and plays various instruments for a group of teens that meet weekly. My son is in God's hands.
We also believe that God will assemble other like minded Christians to us. We aren't looking for them, they just seem to come in and out of our circles of other acquaintances. I look at it this way, we are part of a reformation that was started by Luther but also confused by his own upbringing in church practices. I figure if Luther was able to change the views of many Catholic believers, God can use anyone willing to march to His heart beat.
