Singing in the church using Electronic music, What is your opinion?

About 15 years ago I started a new hobby. Using the Computer to write Lyrics imbedded Christian songs using MIDI. (Karaoke) I love to sing and singing using Karaoke is fun for me. I noticed that the age group singing also was 20 something’s and 30 something’s and most of them didn’t go to church. That’s how I got started with my hobby; I thought I could introduce Jesus to this group of people by writing Christian Karaoke and giving it away. Christian songs are positive; most of the lyrics are bible verses, poems or slogans. I brought my music into large IC’s, but they wanted to only use live music. Five years ago I started working Small town Minnesota. 90% of the Christian music in small towns is hymns played on the Church Organ. 90% of the members attending church were seniors. Young families were nowhere around. The children were just dropped off for Sunday school. I brought my music in through the Sunday school. The children loved to sing from the computer and their parents also loved the music and could sing and enjoyed the new songs. The seniors squashed it. Four months ago while we were singing in front of the church, one elderly person came from the back of the church during the service and said that rock and roll music (karaoke) was the music of the devil and wasn’t to be sung in the church. (I didn’t know Elvis was still in the building). I need your opinion about Electronic music in the church. Good or bad. I joined the OC not because I dislike the IC, but because I feel Electronic music is a good tool to be used in the OC. I feel OC's will work for young families in small towns. Most homes now have the big screen HDTV’s and projectors are cheap. If you do not know what MIDI is, I can send you some for Free and you can try the music out in your groups. I have no interest in selling my music, I just want young families to learn about Jesus and Midi is a good tool. Frank Viola in his new book finding Organic church has a section on corporate singing, excellent advice, but he didn’t mention anything about MIDI. That’s why I am wondering if OC members know about it. My Email is Chimetree@Chaska.net

Dear Wil--

While I'm not a self-proclaimed expert on music (even though I, too, sing), my thoughts are that you should do what it is the Holy Spirit has put in your heart to do. Not everything is going to be peaches & cream, as there are many bumps in the road. But, the Lord has given us victory ahead of time. I'm reminded of the Israelites wandering around the desert. The Lord did not not allow the older generation to enter the promised land for several reasons-- one of them being that they were a hindrance to the move of God. There are still many folks out there who believe with all their heart that anything other than organ music is sinful. I firmly believe this is a "religious spirit" that tries to stop or undo the work of the Holy Spirit. It is sad, because it's what some folks who've been in the IC for a long time have been taught.
Listen to the Spirit of God--let not your heart condemn you...
Hi Will!
I just have one comment...
That music might not be 'religious' enough, and therefore is 'bad'
However, that doesn't hold sway in God's perspective.

Also, one thing that rings true about many things is that they can become redundant and religious even if that was not the intention. We can start doing things and make meetings religious if we value the works rather than clinging to Jesus. The best way to approach the 'doing' is by loosing any agenda and ambition and allowing God to use what we have when it is the right season for it.
Amen!
Yes, Tommyab, you're right about the horrible things that have happened under the guise of being "led by the Spirit". Perhaps I need to clarify myself, as I'm not always clear when I write. If a person has been led by the Spirit, then he will see good fruit resulting from it. This is a far cry from being led by the spirit of religiosity. Also, after re-reading my earlier comment, I did not mean to imply that only older people are responsible for hindering the Spirit of God. Anyone, of any age, can be under the influence of a religious spirit. This also includes those of us who have come out of IC. That religious spirit must be dealt with from time to time, as the Lord reveals things to us.
I just emailed you. I support what the Lord put in your heart. This is the right thing to do, and I hope you're still doing it.

Don't Limit Opportunities

I want to start out by saying how thankful I am for OCT and the people who support and encourage so consistently. I am still learning my way around the site. I check the site every day for new stuff. I am surprised when I see that a lot of times I am the only one online.Wasn't really sure what to title this because I have a couple of things on my mind. Been really praying about what God wants me to do. Sometimes can get frustrated wanting to do something so big for God. But I have realized as I…See More

Leaving it behind

Hello Brothers and Sisters,This week I come to you from the top of the Arbel mountain where Jesus prayed after feeding the 5000. On my way down I stumbled with the view of a small town which is the place someone well known came from. Someone whom discovered in her journey something many of us know in our minds but not necessarily in our hearts.I hope it adds to your ammunition pack for the journey ahead of you!Travel WellPablo…See More
