Tithes, offerings and money:

This is probably one of the most spoken about topics in the institutional church today, but still very few people understand this. I suppose the biggest reason for preachers going on about money is for the sake of job security. For him and his family and also the staff at the institutional church. I hope Kenny will do a message on this topic one day, to explain the reason why tithing in the new testament church is not biblical and also belongs to replacement theology.

The goal of this exposé is not to talk about the reasons for tithing being unbiblical, but rather to explain how we (as a ministry) handle money ourselves. We believe in giving, with an open and rejoicing heart according to your own conscience and the leading of the Holy Spirit.

For as long as what I can remember, Gottalife was never sustained by the ongoing giving of believers. There were times where certain friends of the ministry felt led by the Holy Spirit to give to us, but these occurrences were few and far between. For the most part, I would say over 90% of our income has come through opportunities that resulted from divine appointments in the marketplace. We would get management contracts through Kenny’s gifting and anointing in the area of business. That would mean that we would have to do secular work to bring in money. The Lord normally brought in opportunities through this to minister to key people in these various organizations. At the very least, our handling of the finances of different organizations showed our integrity and trustworthiness in these areas. Millions of dollars have gone through Gottalife, without us taking a cent that did not belong to us. And the money that did belong to us? Well, the majority of it ended up being sowed back into the ministry, either for running costs for our servers and radio network, or to build on our existing platforms to reach more people with the gospel.

As you can see, we do things a little different from other ministries and organizations. We believe our lives belong to God completely, so whether we give with finances, or we give with our time or we sacrifice things so that God’s word can go forth, we do it because we love Him and want to be a part of what God is busy doing at this time. We trust Him fully; He has always come through with our needs. Even in the months when no money came in, we still continued to do what we do. We will not let money (or the lack of it) dictate to us what we do, but rather the leading of the Holy Spirit.

Our attitude has always been to give freely as much as what is possible. “Freely you have received, freely give.” Our goal is not to use the gospel for gain, but to invest ourselves into people so that they can realize their full calling and potential in the Lord, and in the body of Christ.

I don't know of any books off the top of my head, but I know they're out there. One place to start is the following link: Tithing Article I'll find some more resources to share with you as time allows. DM

Very interesting.  If you know of some book or material that dives a little deeper into the subject, I would appreciate it.  Send my a message if you know of anything.

I just uploaded a song called "Be Still My Soul" on my page that I re-mastered, re-instrumented, added effects, and made a simple midi file sound fantastic. Enjoy

Michael, I certainly understand what you're saying. Very few ministers ever speak the TRUTH about the tithe. In OT times, the tithe was the inheritance of the Levites who were not allowed to make a living by any means as was common among the…

I have seen a lot of sermons on the tithing, or giving; some of them very strange.  I remember some time a go when my adult daughter was a teen, and going through a very difficult time, was being hauled off in a police car. We called the pastor…

yes, Quite true. "Doing Church" in house with out the Organic content, is just switching buildings.  We as people tend to compartmentalize areas of our life. Church in this part, school in this part, marriage in this part,…

Amen to that.   It's also of interes that those who had, for example, only nine lambs or calves born in a year, they were not required to hand over anything.   One thing I will say is that I thoroughly appreciate the OT system of…

You're so right, Darrell!  Many of the house churches I'm familiar with are not organic expressions of church but are really just institutional church in miniature.  As Frank Viola says, organic church (OC) is one of the most…

Michael Hartson commented on Jim London's blog post 'What do we do when there is no group to join?'
When I think about the most significant points in my Christian walk, they did not take place in an organized, institutionalized environment.  It was incidental to my world, but wholly intentional by God.

Michael Hartson replied to Michael Hartson's discussion 'Why Can't Christian's Hang Out?'
Sure, it's intentional.  God is responsible for the Results, we are responsible for the action.  God asks us to share our lives, talk to others about him, love others.  Who gets saved, or what a person does or does not do or what…

Michael, you are sharing and asking about something that is very crucial. Often the pattern is "We don't want to be that programmed meeting all designed and led by the fellow hired to make it all run smoothly. We want to be more…
