Pagan Christianity Book discussion

Let's explore the roots of our church practices together and talk about how this book has impacted us and challenged us. This book rocked my world. And I've heard others say something similar.

The Effect of Focus

The Church tends to focus on the cross of Christ: His passion, His death, and His burial. In His suffering for us we find healing and atonement: His body, broken for us; His blood of the New Covenant, poured out for many for the remission of sins. He was wounded for our transgressions, bruised for our iniquities, and by His stripes we are healed. These are all essential aspects of the Gospel message, but they are not the focus of apostolic preaching. Many, if not most, of the world religions…See More

Hi Mike. I thought this looked like a site where we could kind of rehash what we've been through, define our understanding of where God has us, and get some input about pitfalls to look out for. Whaddaya think?

I just posted this give your opinion

Experience has shown me that ina lot of organized church's, there is a hired staff that is expected to do almost everything, after all that is what they are paid to do.The Pastor is the CEO and the buck stops with him.Elders or Deacons are the Board of Directors. They and the church staff are supposed to get everything accomplished after all that is there job. The cogrigation s required give up their Sunday morning sothe sevice better be entertaining and up lifting enough to get me through until next Sunday because I plans for the rest of the week and have given up my Sunday to give God his time.
Peter and the apostles asked that Deacons be elected to handle the needs of the body, then those in a better situation take care of those in need.Leaving the apostles(leaders) time to study, prepare and teach the gospel so that those followers of Christ would be able to spread it through out the world.
As I see the problem chruch's seem to be run as business's and the congregetion is missing out by not taking the responsablity on themselves of learning scripture and time out of their worldly schedules to spread the Good News.Jesus didn't tell us to go to work and get rich so we could drive cadilac and watch football on Sunday afternoon He tolds to go forth throgh out the world and baptise in His name. So my bottom line is before we judge leadership maybe we should take a look at ourselves. All the above is said in love

Michael, my experiences with such groups for more than 20 years now is pretty much the same. Some of them broke up over childish things, such as fleshly disputes, others because they wanted that "religious fix" like spiritual junkies…

The Unseen War by David Kortje

A few weeks back I shared a book review with all of you as I felt it was worthy of your reading. This week I find myself doing the same thing again. You are probably wondering if I have suddenly become a “book reviewer” which of course is not the case at all. In fact quite the contrary. The thing is that for the first time in a very long time I have picked up two books that have really impressed something new in my heart. Not necessarily because the topic was new but more so because of the way…See More

Great story, Michael -- and a good analogy. Two options: contriving a sense of safety/ control or trusting the God who reveals. One is an illusion; the other is life.

I like reading both sides of the issue, and then reading for myself what is written in the Bible. Some thieves have PhD's, and some don't.
