~ Reach Students ... Disciple the 'Nations' ~

My name is Scott Nelson. My family and I live in Bryan, Texas, a growing metropolitan area approximately 85 miles northwest of Houston, Texas. Bryan and its "twin city", College Station, is the home of Texas A&M University.

Texas A&M, with over 44,000 students (fall 2009), is the seventh largest university in the United States. Over 4,500 of A&M's student population are international students, representing 128 nations of the world.

Texas A&M University is truly a harvest mission field.

While we have a burden for university students in general, we are particularly burdened for international students. These students, mainly PhD and post-doctoral students, have come to Texas A&M to pursue their academic and professional careers.

We believe the Lord of the Harvest has sovereignly brought these men and women, and in many cases, their families, to our community to hear the saving message of God's love in Christ and to come to know Him as personal Savior and Lord.

It is our vision to befriend, serve, and share Christ with these students, make disciples of Christ of them, and gather them into simple, organic churches. In simple, organic churches a form of church is modeled that is and can be easily reproduced by these students when they complete their time at A&M and move from our community to either continue their studies at another university or begin their professional careers.

These are the men and women that the Lord is going to use - as church planters, pastors, and evangelsits - to reach their families, networks and professions for Himself and His glory.

Luke 10:2b

Spring Semester Bible Studies Kick Off

Posted on January 20, 2010 at 5:22pm 1 Comment

This evening we begin our spring semester of international student Bible studies at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas.

The Bible studies, using a simplified English language version of the Bible, provide the students the opportunity to practice their English reading, speaking, listening, and comprehension skills. During the course of the reading and discussion time we also discuss grammar, word pronunciation, and various parts of speech as the… Continue

Global House Church Movement Summit

Posted on December 30, 2009 at 10:00pm 0 Comments

Nearly 200 people from more than 37 nations met in New Delhi, India in November to discuss, report on, and pray about what the Lord is doing around the world to reach a lost humanity for Himself through house churches and house church networks.

The Summit’s Steering Group has produced a 14-page summary report of the meeting that I think you will enjoy reading if you are interested in organic, simple churches and house church movements.

The report includes: 1) Notes on… Continue

More Than Numbers

Posted on December 14, 2009 at 8:00pm 0 Comments

Christ-followers and New Testament, Bible-believing churches in the United States and other Western countries have a tremendous opportunity to fulfill the Great Commission to disciple the “nations.” How? By ministering to the international students that the Lord has brought to our universities and colleges to pursue their degrees and research.

The number of students who are here, that we have the opportunity to befriend, serve and share Christ with is amazing.

Hi Scott, thanks for asking about my involvement in organic, simple church here in the UK. It's a long story so I'll give you the shortened version.

I began house churching at the time of the charismatic renewal that happened here in Britain from the mid 60s until the late 70s. At that time we didn't really know what we were doing and we didn't call it house church, but we met at home with a group of about twenty for a while. Eventually most drifted away to join larger organisations.

I moved to the East of England about twelve years ago and in 2001 started meeting again at home, at first there were just two or three of us once or twice a month but now there are three groups, and they all meet weekly. I get along to a weekly CU at work as well. We are in contact with other groups in our area now, forming a loose, informal network. There's also a UK-wide network of networks run by Peter Farmer, and a European network as well. I have organic church friends in Europe and in the USA.

I keep a blog of short notes on the meetings I get along to, but there are plenty more I can't get to of course.

Recently two of us have started trying the CO2 idea suggested by John White. It's proving really useful and very encouraging. Highly recommended.

Life is full and stretching, Yahshua is good! HalleluYah!

Grace and peace to you, your family, and all those who are part of your life in Christ.

Chris

Hi Scott. I know of Dick Scoggins though I haven't met him yet, he lives in High Wycombe. I think Peter Farmer was with him just a few days ago.

I have to say that I don't regard myself as having a ministry, I'm just an ordinary member of the church in the place where I live. I do know that Papa uses me in a variety of ways and I'm determined to keep listening and watching everything he is saying and doing. It's enough to serve my brothers and sisters any way he shows me.

We just found out about this Ning group. We live in Chicago's north suburbs and want to build an organic community here. So far, there are three of us within 30 minutes' drive. We have read Frank Viola's books and attended the Organic Church Conference in Orlando last July, and we look forward to having such a group in the (hopefully) near future!
You say you are ministering to students at Texas A&M. Is that an organic group, or possibly more than one?

Hi, Scott!

Thanks for the information!

We are aware of this group and were e-members for a while, but we soon realized that it is "institutional Christianity" in a broader form than usual, attempting to unite people from different denominations to "win Chicago for Christ."

It seems you also have read Frank Viola's books--what was your reaction? After reading "Reimagining Church" and "Pagan Christianity" and (subsequently) attending the Orlando conference, we are definitely on the same sheet of music with Frank, if not on the same line or measure!

Hope all is well in Texas. Best wishes!

Michael Hartson commented on Jim London's blog post 'What do we do when there is no group to join?'
When I think about the most significant points in my Christian walk, they did not take place in an organized, institutionalized environment.  It was incidental to my world, but wholly intentional by God.

Michael Hartson replied to Michael Hartson's discussion 'Why Can't Christian's Hang Out?'
Sure, it's intentional.  God is responsible for the Results, we are responsible for the action.  God asks us to share our lives, talk to others about him, love others.  Who gets saved, or what a person does or does not do or what…
