The Gospel Train's A'Comin'
Slaves sung the spiritual, The Gospel
train’s a’comin’, to alert other slaves
a group was preparing to escape and
travel north to freedom. “Gospel Train
was code for the Underground Railroad.
Plantation owners were unaware their
slaves were planning to escape; slave
songs were part of the day’s routine. A
plantation owner simply heard the
religious and Biblical references and
assume the slaves were singing for
spiritual reasons.
Lyrics:
The Gospel train’s a’comin’
I hear it just at hand
I hear the car wheel rumblin’
And rollin’ thro’ the land
Chorus:
Get on board little children
Get on board little children
Get on board little children
There's room for many more
I hear the train a’comin'
She's comin' round the curve
She's loosened all her steam and brakes
And strainin' ev'ry nerve
Chorus:
The fare is cheap and all can go
The rich and poor are there
No second class aboard this train
No difference in the fare

Just as the slaves sang this in the
fields decades ago for the coming hope of
freedom, there is slavery again these days.
Yet, it is a different kind of slavery.
We are slaves of sin. People say it's
their choice, but sin is not good in the
long run. Sin bites and it bites hard.
People that got into sin for the fun now
wish they could get out but are trapped,
thinking there is no other way.
However, there is another way.
Jesus came for this very reason. He brings the gospel train. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father but through Him. Jesus offers us freedom from the awful clutch sin has on us. When we renounce our sin and turn to Jesus, freedom is ours.
Romans 8:1 there is therefore no
condemnation for those who are in Christ
Jesus. Yes we can be forgiven for our
past and be free at last.
There is no good work we could ever do
to earn salvation. It's free. Ephesians 2:8,9
"For by grace you have been saved through
faith; and that not of yourselves, it is
the gift of God; not as a result of
works, so that no one may boast."
Accept Jesus' offer of salvation from the
wrath to come. Jesus offers salvation
today.
