Myth #1

It is only the traditional mainline churches that have large numbers of leavers. While it is true that people are leaving the traditional churches people are also leaving evangelical, charismatic and Pentecostal churches.
Myth #2

The people who leave are young adults, people on the fringe of our churches, and people who have not been in the church for very long.
Myth #3

Those with children are less likely to leave.
Myth #4

If Mom and Dad go to church, their children will grow up to be churchgoers too.
Myth #5

The people who leave lack commitment.
Myth #6

Leavers don’t have an adequate grounding in the faith.
Myth #7

They leave because of the increased pressure on people’s time today.
Myth #8

They leave because of personal issues and disagreements with church leaders.
Myth #9

They’ll be coming back.
Myth #10

They are backsliding and giving away their faith.

Pen4Him, I'm so glad that you are free and that you can see Jesus everywhere. That's awesome. By the way, have you heard of www.thegodjourney.com. They really helped me to put my feelings and experiences to words.

Debra, wow, that's 9 out of 10!

By the way, I posted this on my blog because I wanted people to realize why some of us are leaving and so that "they" might understand better.

There has been some discussion there even some comments about the "accuracy" of these myths. i.e. that some of these myths are not actually really myths. If you want to get in that conversation there as well, it might help when others interact with people who have actually left the IC.

My husband & I were were steeped in the activities of IC. AG, NL (Charismatic), and one that was completely independent of any "overseers". We rarely missed a service , and were involved with activities, including deaconing & office administration. So, that dispels myths# 1, 2, 5, 6, & 7. As far as #8-10, we couldn't agree w/the hierarchy structure of authority. We knew something was out of place, but we obeyed the Lord & got out of there, & never went back--nor do we regret it. We have not turned our backs on Jesus, nor will we.

I'm getting the idea that there are a lot of younger Organic Churchers also, the (often musical) youth ministry of the IC having failed. Great list and comments!

Ron, never mind Frank Viola YOU should write books! I am surprised (but pleasantly surprised) that many in your circle who are interested in Organic Church are over 70. Wow! That's great because there are people that are not just going through the motions anymore but who are really thinking about community. Sounds like you will have a great organic community surrounding you!
