A few weeks back I shared a book review with all of you as I felt it was worthy of your reading. This week I find myself doing the same thing again. You are probably wondering if I have suddenly become a “book reviewer” which of course is not the case at all. In fact quite the contrary. The thing is that for the first time in a very long time I have picked up two books that have really impressed something new in my heart. Not necessarily because the topic was new but more so because of the way it has been written.
This week I am wanting to share with you a book by a gentleman by the name of David Kortje. The book is called The Unseen War: Winning the fight for life. I began reading this book a few days ago and at first with some hesitation as spiritual warfare is a subject I have read extensively on in the past. Most of the books if not all of them were written from a knowledge acquired through the study of the subject and not so much from a first person experience. In other words written from the head instead of the heart.
This approach makes this book very readable for what is often a subject that is heavy and tedious to read. In his book Mr. Kortje shares with us principles that he has lived out in his own life and experienced throughout his journey. While reading I often found myself living these moments with him as one inevitably does when someones writing has been done from their heart and not just their good and clever intentions. Furthermore, we are given great insights into what is really going on behind the scenes in all of our lives without exception.
Mr. Kortje does an excellent job in exposing that no matter whether our approach is passive or active towards this unseen war we are nevertheless always engaged in it. To avoid it or ignore it will mean becoming a passive casualty of it nevertheless. In Chapter 7, which by the way was my favorite, he very skillfully shares with us the importance of learning to hear and relate with God on a first person level and not through hearsay. He reminds us of the peril many of us find ourselves in when we don’t have this direct line open with the almighty. He describes this reality very well when he writes, “So it is with many of us when we consider the much weightier issue of hearing from God. Part of us assumes that if we just do the right things, read the manual carefully, and put forth our best effort, of course we will hear from God. Many have done so before us, so this should not be so difficult. But then that ugly antagonist Experience arrives on the scene again, reminding us of our failures and doubts. We conclude that no, we will never be able to hear from God. Both thoughts are toxic to us taking our part in the battle. The first is poisoned with pride and self-accomplishment: the idea that if we try hard, we can do it. And the second denies the very tool by which we have any chance of hearing from God: faith.”
This is a book that will give you a whole new perspective about spiritual warfare. It will clearly show you that the best way to remain in the right place is not by what we do or don’t do but instead by focusing our energy in developing a living and thriving relationship with God within our hearts. A relationship that includes hearing from him that leads to a greater understanding that we need others to make it through and not just ourselves. This book more than ever shows that we don’t have it altogether but that together with others we can have it all. Including victory over the enemy of our hearts and souls.
I strongly recommend you pick up a copy of this insightful and empowering book for you and your loved ones.
In the Zone,
Pablo
